Dear...The body of the letter I mailed to NBC today:
Dear Sir and/or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I know you are a very busy person, and therefore I will get straight to the point.
My husband and I are fans and watchers of several shows in your primetime lineup, including The Office, 30 Rock, and Heroes. There is one NBC series in particular that we both consider “must-watch-live, never miss, no DVR delay”, and that is Chuck. The series is inventive, humorous, and action-packed with just the right amount of geek-culture love and ‘80s nostalgia for our enjoyment. It is one of the most creative and enjoyable shows on TV, and it clearly is not even close to running out of gas quite yet. Should it disappear from your lineup, it would be sorely missed in our household.
My DVR records several other shows on Monday nights on other networks, but Chuck has my eyeballs (and those of my husband) glued to the screen as it airs, much to the benefit of your advertisers. Since I understand demographics may be important, I am 25 years old (him, 26) and we live in Jacksonville, Florida. We are not Nielsen viewers, but believe our viewership matters.
We support the show in any way we can. We own the first season on DVD, and have pre-ordered the second season. Most weeks we watch the latest episode again on Hulu.com. We have encouraged several friends and family members to tune in Monday nights at 8:00 pm Eastern. In short, we agree wholeheartedly with the numerous TV critics and thousands of fans alike; please renew Chuck for a third season today!
In closing, I’d like to tell you that I have enjoyed NBC’s programming for several years. Friends was the first show that I ever made a point to watch every week, and Thursday has always been “must-see TV” on NBC for me. In all my years of TV viewing, this is the first time I have ever been compelled to write a letter to a network, nevertheless one concerning the renewal status of a TV show. Please consider my request in that light, along with that of the several other Chuck supporters you have heard from in the last month. Please renew Chuck.
Thank you for your time and consideration.Saranoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17517257.post-13290139843008959612009-04-21T09:05:00.000-04:002009-04-21T09:05:00.000-04:00I admit, I don't watch Chuck, largely because of t...I admit, I don't watch Chuck, largely because of the 18 car pileup on Monday nights. I'm a Gossip Girl fan and I like How I met your mother and that is really all I have time for. If Chuck were on Thursdays, I think I could find time for it.

Also, I mostly only want to start watching because of your praise of it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17517257.post-46030447713241303292009-04-21T03:55:00.000-04:002009-04-21T03:55:00.000-04:00Dear Ben,
Do not listen to all these people. Just...Dear Ben,

Do not listen to all these people. Just keep partying and doing whatever you want with NBC.

Don't worry about growing your network or rehabbing its image. Just keep churning out brain-dead eye-candy like Heroes. I bet that show sell really well overseas, who gives a crap about the ratings over here.

Do not even think about giving a Chuck a third season. Just think, there are still people who think you can right the ship at the peacock, namely Jeff Zucker. You can't screw that up by renewing a show like Chuck when you can pick up a pilot that could be the next Biggest Loser. Uh, that is the best reality program on NBC, right? A weight loss competition appropriately named for the network.

Don't worry about people sending you pocket protectors. Just donate them to the nerds at MIT and let them figure out some way to save the rainforests in the Amazon with those babies.

It's late and I have to prepare to snatch up all the procedurals featuring middle-aged men or thirty-something women a couple of weeks from now.So my final words: Yvonne Strahovski and Zachary Levi? All they need is Quincy Jones and Xavier Nady to complete the first name alphabets.

With your best interest at heart,
Les MoonvesAnonymous CBS Presidentnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17517257.post-71800051232548815872009-04-21T01:56:00.000-04:002009-04-21T01:56:00.000-04:00Oh, I hope this letter makes an impact! Love them all, but Chuck is the one that I *enjoy* the most - like you said, it lifts my spirits *every time!*

It seems to me that NBC cannot weigh the ratings in their decision whatsoever. Mondays at 8! Totally an unfair comparison. There's nothing good on TV on Tuesdays or Wednesdays (I watch DVDs or DVR those nights) - it would be interesting to see what ratings Chuck would get then.

There are four (five) shows I would watch on Mondays at 8: Chuck, BBT/HIMYM, DWTS, and House. The DVR receiver can only record two shows at once, so DWTS and House have been bumped. Sometimes I catch them online later.

Oh, and by the way, I really want to boycott NBC altogether because of the stupid Leno thing, but my four NBC shows are just too good to miss!barbrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09918903739834969992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17517257.post-49355959033765958372009-04-20T15:36:00.000-04:002009-04-20T15:36:00.000-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.barbrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09918903739834969992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17517257.post-9617668276107092522009-04-20T15:10:00.000-04:002009-04-20T15:10:00.000-04:00I gave up on Chuck after just a couple of episodes...I gave up on Chuck after just a couple of episodes which I didn't think were very good...looks like I might have exited prematurely...

But if its renewed for a 3rd season, I'll catch up and watch it due to the strength of Alan's reviews of the show and his letter. FNL clearly has better highs and more potential than Chuck, and can be a better quality show, but it's had probably worse luck than Chuck in terms of production. With the constant threat of being cancelled, FNL has rushed storylines to make sure they were told and given us pretty crappy stories (Season 2's murder plot) to try and boost ratings. Not to mention the writer's strike was REALLY poor timing for FNL in that Season 2 had no effective ending. Now that they're getting two more seasons I think FNL will relax and develop, but I think, as a show, Chuck has stayed more on course to date than FNL.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17517257.post-67234279204501821172009-04-20T14:54:00.000-04:002009-04-20T14:54:00.000-04:00I believe NBC.com works on the same schedule as Hu...I believe NBC.com works on the same schedule as Hulu.Alan Sepinwallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03388147774725646742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17517257.post-48898486494455638732009-04-20T14:48:00.000-04:002009-04-20T14:48:00.000-04:00Alan, thanks - but unfortunately I can't get Hulu....Alan, thanks - but unfortunately I can't get Hulu. I'd hate to see it go.

I was curious, since you linked the NY Times interview with Josh Schwartz, what do you think about his statement that the network supports the show on a level that surprised him, especially since it wasn't produced by them? Do you think that means that a lot of this "Will it return?" drama is really not so much ratings right now (they are mostly set in stone for now), but more about the negotiations between NBC and WB on price per episode?Franknoreply@blogger.com
