The women are super; the shows aren’t

This column looks at the underwhelming premiere episodes of "Bionic Woman" and "Private Practice":
Jamie Summers has the classic complement of super powers: faster than a speeding car, able to leap from building to building in a single bound, rip apart a chain link fence like tissue paper, etc. Addison Montgomery can't do any of that, but she has uncanny abilities of her own, notably an innate likability so strong that she became one of the most popular characters on "Grey's Anatomy" even after being introduced as a witch-on-wheels.

Unfortunately, these two super women have been stranded in two not-so-super shows: "Bionic Woman" and "Private Practice." Though they may be the two most-hyped new shows of the season -- "Bionic" as a remake of the '70s series, "Private" as a "Grey's" spin-off -- they're also the most disappointing.

  1. I defended Bionic Woman a while back ago and I think you're being hard on the show. Well we'll see they have until November to convince me.

  2. One of the TV Guide writers mentioned that Episode 2 of "Private Practice" was much improved. Even so I'm reluctant to give this one a chance. The backdoor pilot was *so* bad and the season premiere is being roundly panned by every critic I respect. It's a pity Shonda Rimes thinks that Addison has to be stripped of her self-esteem in order to be worthy of her own show.

  3. Wait, Addison as a doctor is strong, but Addison as a person is a dingbat? THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE!

The sad thing is, I'd watch Daly and Walsh make kissy faces at each other no matter how bad the show...

  4. Does Bionic Woman still have time to assist Dr. Jackman?

  5. The big problem with the Bionic Woman premiere is that it feels like a two-hour movie that has had half of it cut out. Without getting into it specifically, way too much happens to quickly.

  6. Maybe Bionic Woman can limp along until BSG wraps up and they can kill off Jamie Summers.

  7. Looks like Little Miss Bionica needs to get out in the sun more.....

  8. Then again, Toby, maybe it's Miss Addisinica that could use some more time out of the sun...

  9. What's with the casting on Bionic Woman (yes I know) but to have so many of the folks from Battlestar takes me out of the show and makes me long for BG.

  10. I was just a wee tyke, but I don't remember Lindsay Wagner wearing such tight tops. Thumbs up!

  11. Re: Jim's comment on the new Bionic Woman's tight tops: nope, the original version dressed much like Bill Haverchuck in the Halloween ep of Freaks and Geeks...Must go rewatch his "conversation" with Steve Austin in front of the mirror!
