To answer the question at the end of your column, Alan: no there's nothing wrong with that. To quote Joey Tribbiani "A TV that appears as if from nowhere? That's the dream!"
Anyway...I can't help but notice how unoriginal most of the new shows are. You've got remakes of foreign shows (Life on Mars, Kath & Kim, Worst Week, The Ex List, Sit Down, Shut Up and possibly Good Behavior); remakes of old US shows (90210, Knight Rider, and possibly Cupid); spin-offs of existing shows (The Office spin-off, The Cleveland Show); shows based on books (Surviving the Filthy Rich and possibly Bad Mother's Handbook); and updates of classic stories (Merlin, Crusoe). I don't know if this lack of originality was a symptom of the writers strike, but if it wasn't then I don't think I'm gonna have much sympathy for the writers next time they claim to be underpaid.
"Fringe" sounds interesting, and I'm glad the Fox line-up will at least give me something to do on Tuesday nights. But is that Matthew Abbadon (from LOST, and I know you all love him from THE WIRE, which I've never seen) in the picture? What might that mean for his casting on LOST?

Yeah, that's Lance Reddick. I figure since both shows are produced by JJ Abrams, and since he's only a supporting player on Fringe, something can be worked out for when he's needed over in Hawaii.
Dollhouse on Monday nights airing alongside a bona fide Fox hit show in 24. Does this mean FOX is actually going to support this show and not give it the Firefly treatment?
I've been so busy all week that all I got out of the upfronts was that Scrubs would be on ABC in January, and Boston Legal would be back.
Was there anything else I needed to know? None of the shows I care about were really in danger... (oh, did the Big Bang Theory survive? I like it, but it's not in my top... 8)
I just got thru ER (they are EVIL!) and still have 2 eps of House to watch.. and my roommate wants me to have some pie

Oops...Eleventh Hour is also a remake of a British show. I'm sure there' still more I didn't think of too.
ReplyDelete^ Writers are not the ones who decide what gets on the air.
ReplyDeleteAbout Fox sked, does it mean that Sarah Connor and Prison Break only get half a season?

Same question as mrglass but for all the midseason shows (such as Dollhouse). Do they only get half a season or just a straight no breaks run like 24?
ReplyDeleteI hope the folks at Fringe address one of the great quandries of our time: How does Jerry O'Connell keep getting work?

ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to Fringe and hoping it wont be a disappointment
