Today's column reviews CBS' long-delayed, semi-hyped period drama,
"Swingtown," of which I was not especially fond. Unless a post materializes here tonight at 11 -- and I doubt it will, as I have a lot of work to do on tomorrow's "Wire" review -- assume that this is the place to discuss the pilot after it airs.
How's Davenport's accent?
ReplyDeleteStrange. He sounds like he's imitating Nic Cage in "Moonstruck."
ReplyDeleteAre you saying that Jack Davenport may have seen more action on (original) Coupling than on Swingtown?
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting argument, and I haven't seen the show yet, but I'd like to think that there's an artful way to imply excess. Because excessively wallowing in excess has been done excessively, and it wears real thin. Maybe they'll forego that in favor of doing, like, characters and stuff.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I just wanted to note how hilarious the pair of comments are over at nj.com. CBS IS SMUT SPELLED BACKWARDS! OH NOES!
I fell asleep during it last night. I'm pretty sure that's not a good sign.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Jack Davenport is that his character here is also married to a Susan, so every time he calls her by name, I'm expecting something goofy, like his hapless Steve on "Coupling."
I haven't seen any of the "Pirate" movies - but I'm even more of a freak because to me, Miriam Shor is the girl/boy "married" to Hedwig in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." A far cry from her conservative suburban housewife in "Swingtown."
I can't comment really until I watch the rest of the pilot, I guess. But having grown up in the 70's, I didn't completely buy this, despite the Dr. Scholl's sandals and cans of Tab. I still think that "Dazed and Confused" nailed it best - although obviously my memories are all from a teenage perspective.
Alan Poul of 6FU is attached to this series, so I'm going to give it a shot. Agree that it would be better served on cable, but summer TV choices are pretty thin, and the pilot didn't suck.
