Mad Men: The waiting is the hardest part

Not sure what the preview for the next episode of "Mad Men" said last night, but AMC sent out a press release today saying that they're going to air a rerun this coming Sunday so fans won't have to choose between watching an original "Mad Men" and potentially watching Jon Hamm and company walk away with a hoped-for Emmy haul. Episode nine of season two will now air Sept. 28. All the remaining episodes have been pushed back a week along with that, with the finale now scheduled for Oct. 26

  1. Let me be the first to express my disgust about AMC's decision. What a dumb excuse to stretch the season out. I'm sure most of us don't care about the Emmy's. The episodes are put on HD on demand anyway. Not to mention the encore presentations.

So now we have to wait 2 weeks for a new episode because of the idiocy of the top people at AMC.

I guess they assume the hardcore fans of the show are the same type of people who are glued to the tv seat for the Emmy awards nonsense.
The rating have slipped since the season opener. Disrupting the momentum of the season won't help.

  2. I'm glad they made the decision, although I would have been willing to DVR 'Mad Men' at a later time or day.

Since I work nights, I have to DVR all my prime time choices, but I'm only able to do two at the same time. I don't think True Blood was going to be preempted for the Emmy Awards, so something had to give.

This being the 60th Emmy Award presentation, and big promises have been made for what may happen, I definitely wanted to get a copy of that.

So I'm one who's glad that 'Mad Men' wasn't going to make their fans choose.

  3. Normally I'd roll my eyes at the overconfidence, though I suppose AMC does have valid reasons to be confident. While I'm not a huge fan, I'll give AMC a pass because they deserve kudos for supporting the show.

Or maybe I'm just becoming zen about a 1-week delay after all these 7+ month breaks in the BSG seasons.

  4. I'm just glad Dexter will be on at 9 during the overlap.

  5. Does anyone actually still watch awards shows?

  6. I still watch the Emmys, and while i LOVE Mad Men, I'm hoping for a Jon Hamm win, but a Lost victory for best drama. I can't resist a comeback. Mad Men can take it next year!

  7. Considering Mad Men already won 4 Emmys the other night when they announced the Creative Emmys, I am psyched to see what happens Sunday night. I'm hoping for wins for Jon, John, and Best Drama.

  8. That's ridiculous. If I want to watch the Emmy's, I'll Tivo it like everything else.

Do they think it's still 1962?

  9. I watch the Emmy's and am glad that they are putting the new episode on hold, as I do not have a tivo or a dvr and do not have HD on demand...being recently out of college I can't afford that stuff and am lucky to have a tv and cable!

  10. I too am glad, I watch the awards shows, all of them with my girlfriends. So I am so happy I don't have to stay up late to watch Mad Men, so I don't have to avoid this site all day.

  11. I watch the Emmys, The Golden Globes and the SAG awards. Since I mostly don't "do" movies, the Oscars are generakky a waste of time (last year, I hadn't even heard of most of the contenders) and I've long since given up on the Grammys (which means I missed Zach Braff winning)

Last week i fast forwarded thru the Alma awards. I must have missed Judy Reyes... (did she win anything?)

darn,i was looking forward to Sunday for MM but at least House will be on Tuesday.

..as long as Spader doesn't win...

  12. Nooooo!!! The preview for next week was so good, I was already finding it hard to wait seven days!

    DVR, AMC. Sheesh.

  13. My guess is that this is an economic decision. I'm sure AMC is aware that a large portion of viewers can (or do) "DVR" Mad Men. However, when shopping for the advertising dime, you want to maximize the viewership and first run viewers (not"DVR"ing) are what is counted.

You don't want your biggest show up against popular events (which is why we don't see new network programming during the Super Bowl).

  14. A crop of Emmys should boost the ratings of the 9/28 broadcast, and the network will want to take full advantage, so perhaps the next ep. is a corker.

They'll want to avoid a repeat of what happened in the premiere: good ratings with lots of curious first-time viewers, only to have the ratings nose-dive in week two, as said premiere was dramatically inert.

I hope the show gets back the mojo it had in season one. It's feeling very soap-opera-esque lately.

  15. As one of many here in Ohio who lost power on Sunday (and still don't have any as of Weds, I thought the hurricane hit in TX not OH) I am dying to see this past week's episode. I can wait an extra week as I am waiting to see this past week.
