In
today's column, I talk about the new season of
"Friday Night Lights," primarily repeating material from
my post last week explaining why I decided to review the season now rather than waiting for the NBC run. I also talk a bit about some of the storylines in the first episode -- all of which
Jason Katims covered at press tour, but which you might want to avoid if you're completely spoiler-phobic.
I have DirecTV and am beyond excited in anticipation of Season 3. But is there anyone out there who can explain the economics of how one of the cable channels like AMC doesn't pick up FNL? Is it simply that DirecTV paid more for the rights? I cannot imagine why the relatively-low-for-network but relatively-high-for-cable average number of FNL viewers wouldn't make FNL economically feasible on a cable station, when dozens of cable shows like Monk/Burn Notice/Breaking Bad/Mad Men (which surely are just as expensive to produce) are apparently economically feasible. And the average FNL viewer is upscale (even by network standards) and therefore desirable in the eyes of advertisers. Can anyone explain this economic anomaly?
ReplyDeletedo you have any idea if these episodes will be on HULU before they're aired on regular NBC?
ReplyDelete"...but the acting remains strong (particularly by Chandler and Britton, the First Couple of primetime)"
ReplyDelete@Alan - Are you forgetting Hamm and Jones?
do you have any idea if these episodes will be on HULU before they're aired on regular NBC?
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned in the column I linked to, no. It's exclusive: DirecTV or nothing.
@Alan - Are you forgetting Hamm and Jones?
ReplyDeleteNo, but Britton and Chandler are a stronger overall duo, where January Jones kind of waxes and wanes for me. Plus, Coach and Mrs. Coach like each other; Don and Betty don't.
Gotta find a friend with DirecTV...LOL. Glad you think the show has improved -- what a waste of Chandler and Britton if it hadn't gotten better.
ReplyDeleteIs there any word as to how the success of this venture will be judged? They don't really have enough of a sample for there to be a rating.
ReplyDeleteAlan, did you catch this news?

Not that I'd expect you to blog about a call-in show each week or anything, but if you've got DirecTV it's probably worth a mention. "Live From Dillon" sounds like it could be fun.
