In today's column, I review "Jesse Stone: Thin Ice," the fifth movie based on the Robert B. Parker character (albeit the first not based on a Parker book). It's good.
This will be the first Jesse Stone tv movie I've seen. The others must have been pre-DVR and I probably had prior commitments to other shows. But a cast like this is impossible to pass up!
I'm very glad CBS is finally airing this. I think it was shot in 2007. I believe a sixth Jesse Stone has already been completed as well. The first 4 were all very good. I'm a huge fan of both Robert B. Parker and Tom Selleck. I'd love to see them fo a Jesse Stone movie or two a year.
Even though I spent 13 years (recently enough) living near "Paradise" (and most times I was there, I was lost) I only watched the first Jesse Stone movie - and I fell asleep in the middle. My brother's read every book in every series but I started with Spenser (which I like) and can't get past Scool Days...
If they *did* do the Sunny Randall... who would they cast? I heard it was written for Helen Hunt.
I love me some Tom Selleck, and I honestly don't understand why he hasn't been even more popular than he is. He could totally pull off the alpha dog/team leader type role that Mark Harmon and William Peterson fit so well, or even the loner type that he played so underratedly (I don't care if it's a questionable word!) in Quigley Down Under. He's just cool and relaxed and funny and expressive...and I'll stop now before I give you guys the wrong idea.
I have never seen a Jesse Stone movie, but my mom has mentioned them to me before, I like Tom Selleck, and your review has intrigued me. I think I'll be setting the DVR.

Yeah, they've already made the sixth one. I wonder why CBS sat on this one so long. The only thing I can think of is that with Selleck starring in Las Vegas last season they didn't want to promote something starring someone from another network.
Glad to see a review of Jesse Stone. The mysteries aren't much but what a great character. I was a big Magnum fan and have been disappointed that Selleck has never found another great role (I liked "An Innocent Man" though). Hopefully it can do well againt "The Apprentice" and justify several more movies. Is Viola Davis in this one? She was only briefly in Sea Change and I'm sure her price has increased with an Oscar nomination.
I recorded this only because you said it was good, and I was all set to abandon and erase it in the first ten minutes.
Well, I really enjoyed it, watched the whole thing, and I'm looking forward to the next installment.
Besides the standout performance by Selleck, I love that all the characters are smart, competent people who act in ways that make sense.
I feel like this is straightforward, unfettered entertainment that isn't afraid to be enjoyable. It doesn't feature any of the usual manipulations and tricks others seem to feel almost obligated to use.
I don't need to be stressed out to enjoy a good yarn. This was nicely done.
Nice review. I was impressed with the movie, though as with most Parker stories (I'm a fan), the loose ends sort of wrap up too quickly and sometimes too neatly at the end. That aside, the actors were all spot on, though I missed seeing Molly's character in there (could they not get that actress back?). I guess Rose is her substitute. As with the other films, great music, camera-work, acting, pacing, writing.... too bad Selleck is so much older than the literary Stone - he may not be able to carry off the role for many more years. But I could be wrong. Would be neat to see Parker's "Hit Man" books adapted to the screen, too.
