Because I had jury duty today, I don't have time to write up tonight's fifth episode of
"Nurse Jackie," but feel free to discuss it on your own. (And, as always, keep in mind that we're not going to talk about the next episode, which went up On Demand today.)
Take that House -- only five episodes in and we have Lupis (albeit, pre-diagnosed).
ReplyDeleteI'm liking it, but Akalitus is still a puzzling character to me. Getting tasered is just this week's getting dosed, where it's funny because it's a bad thing happening to the uptight administrator. Maybe it's just me, but at this point the character seems nothing more than a bureaucratic straw (wo)man.
I've found myself not really paying attention anymore unless Zoey's onscreen.
ReplyDeleteanother somewhat entertaining, but also frustrating episode...so far, most of the characters seem very very fictional to me...in a way, it reminds me of Gray's in that I can't imagine most of these people outside the setting of the show interacting with real people...I'm left feeling that the show can't be taking seriously, which would be fine if this were just a farcical comedy...but so far, I'm not finding it successful on that level
ReplyDeleteI'm giving it a whole season's run but I probably won't be back for season 2. Love Edie (she's always a pleasure to see), but the show brings absolutely nothing to the table. Has anything at all changed from episode 1 through episode 5?
ReplyDeleteThe Alakitus taser scene almost made me quit on the spot. Overall, this is a tonally inept series lacking in any forward motion in plot.

Right. Basically just stand alone episodes. I find I tend to enjoy series with season long arcs. "Angel" was a series that developed arcs over entire seasons. Then the network required stand alone episodes for the 5th season. And that drained most of the enjoyment out of the show for me.
I'm enjoying the secondary characters, especially Zoey and Momo, more than the primary characters at this point. In that respect, I enjoyed the ep, particularly the scene with Zoey and the doc having dinner. But they need to start explaining why Jackie has a second life and fast. Getting rid of Akalitus would be a good thing, too.
ReplyDeleteBesides SHOWTIME, is there anywhere else to see this? I watched the first episode online at Netflix, but have been unable to find it elsewhere. Probably will have to wait for the DVDs.
ReplyDeleteI actually thought it was pretty terrible and annoying. Everything was too much. Zoey is too naive and child-like, Akalitus is too bitchy, EVERYONE is too ridiculous in not questioning what Jackie's life is like outside the hospital, Coop is too silly and hard to take seriously, and Jackie is too much Magical Nurse with the patients. I don't know...I have one more episode to go before I just don't care anymore. I agree with other commenters...the side characters are more enjoyable than the main ones, and the episodes don't seem to go anywhere. It's not funny enough to be farce, too silly to be a straight drama.
ReplyDeleteHuh. I did not dig this episode.
I'm glad you're all at least giving it one more episode ... and if you're not, w/o spoiling it, I'll just say you really should. It might not change your mind about the series' problems, but it's definitely worth 25 minutes of your time.
ReplyDeleteI too have heard good things about the upcoming episodes from reviewers and others who've watched them on screener DVDs. (No spoilers at all here.)
ReplyDeleteI was pretty much ready to give up on it, but I'll give Edie Falco a little more slack. It's a credit to her as an actress that she can do something with this character.
All the other characters, with the possible exception of Zoey, could have a helicopter drop on them and I wouldn't even turn around to look at the explosion.
I especially feel bad for Anna Devere Smith.
