I chose to do an interview with Michael Strahan last week rather than a proper review of his new sitcom "Brothers" (which debuts tonight at 8 on Fox with two episodes) because I didn't have the heart to stomp all over the guy who stomped out the Patriots in Super Bowl 42.
But in all candor, "Brothers" is not anything you might classify as "good." Fienberg gets into cataloging the number of jokes in the pilot that are either about the gap in Strahan's teeth, co-star Daryl "Chill" Mitchell being in a wheelchair, or dad Carl Weathers apparently suffering early-onset Alzheimer's (a plotline that's abandoned altogether in the second episode). It's...
Nah, I can't say anything more. But even if Strahan and that Giants team holds a special place in your heart, pass. You'll want to remember him sacking Tom Brady, and not this.
Any word on whether Carl Weathers has touched his per diem...?
ReplyDeleteAre Pats fans still bitter about that time their team cheated the Rams out of a Super Bowl?
ReplyDeleteMeh, I suppose they're over it by now.
At the very least, Strahan should pick up some good acting tips from Weathers. Buying your cars at police auctions, stew making, etc. The things that make good actors great.
ReplyDeleteI saw a two minute promo for this a couple months back and I could tell from that that this show would be a steaming pile. Two minutes of the best stuff from the show and I didn't even crack a smile.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big Giants fan and I love the Strahan but I wouldn't watch this show on a bet.
Big Mike has a lot of charm and charisma. It's probably a mistake making a show where he basically plays himself.
Sad thing is, I've always thought Daryl Mitchell was actually pretty funny. He was great on Ed, he was the only thing I liked on Veronica's Closet before I gave up on that, and he & Chi McBride were perfect on The John Laroquette Show.
ReplyDeleteI'll choose to keep those memories in tact rather than taint them by watching this.
Wait a minute. CCH Pounder is in this? What the hell?
ReplyDeleteAll sense of reason just got turned inside out like a display at BodyWorks.
Did i imagine it or was Mitchell Hurwitz involved in this in some way?
ReplyDeleteAlan, you say you didn't have "heart" to tell Strahan how bad his show was.
ReplyDeleteI believe the portion of your anatomy you're lacking is a bit lower on your body.
Chris
Poor CCH Punder...
ReplyDeleteI sat through the last 10 minutes of this while waiting for Dollhouse to come on. And right after watching Warehouse 13. The combination of how bad it was (it felt a lot longer that 10 minutes) and seeing CCH Pounder in two such different roles (one powerful and awesome, the other weak and not funny) almost made my head explode.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Strahan should offer Carl Weathers lunch at Burger King in exchange for some acting lessons.
ReplyDeleteWatched the pilot; watching bad TV makes you appreciate the good stuff even more. Watching the credits though, I saw Mitchell Hurwitz (creator of "Arrested Development") listed as a producer. It's probably a no-show title, but why in the world would he put his name anywhere near something like "Brothers" voluntarily? Whadda ya'll think, does Mr Murdoch have some kind of dirt on Mitchell, blackmailing him into it? Strange it is, anyhow.
