Firewall & Iceberg podcast, episode 13: Party Down, Gravity, You Don't Know Jack and more
New Firewall & Iceberg podcast is up, in which Dan and I talk about a bunch of things, including Friday's return of "Party Down." NJ.com has the relevant podcast links and running times.
Re: Sun and Jin Lapidus' line is in running for the corniest thing I ever heard on Lost. And Sun never lost her voice - she could always speak Korean. I was actually expecting them to speak Korean again (when I am caught by surprise or really emotion - I tend to revert automatically to my native tongue)
I don't know, I'm of the opinion that Lost's CG effects have never been very good. I watched Confirmed Dead and The Economist recently; the underwater plane in the former doesn't look much better than the underwater Island in LA X, and the freighter rocket in the latter doesn't look much better than Widmore's shells in The Last Recruit. To my eyes anyway.
That well prop, though... I don't think I've seen a prop look quite so fake on TV before.
I've been looking forward to the return of Party Down. I will continue to miss Lynch but look forward to amusement and laughs regardless.
I have to comment on Gravity without even having seen it. A topic such as "failed suicide attempts" has to be handled deftly. U of T takes a very serious personality disorder and injects layers of levity without being dismissive (as S2 is showing). I have not watched and will not watch Gravity. The description you and Daniel provided makes me want to take a fork in the eye. I'm not normally dismissive without one view but I do care for Sergei and without any humor-dark or funny, it's not worth the bother.
"You Don't Know Jack" has made me curious for a variety of reasons. However, Pacino's grandstanding can be off putting. It will be cued on the dvr. I feel a bit ambivalent with the exception of real interviews with potential patients.
Starved was amazing and I have serious trouble believing Gravity won't be great too if it's anything remotely like Starved was. Hilarity and pathos tied in together perfectly, just like Party Down.
Alan, I know this is off topic, but have you heard anything about the "Midnight Run" sequel that DeNiro is talking about? They are saying that Grodin won't be involved, which has me worried that this will head into "Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls" territory.
Alan, I just saw the Twitter update in your sidebar about Party Down eps being on Starz's site. Will they have all eps there, or just the two previews? Thanks!
I have a question about the comments on Lost. You talk about the budget being reduced this season, perhaps by a lot. But given that this is one of ABC's highest rated dramas and also that they can hype it as the final season and thus it's very sellable, why would the budget be so down?
I have an idea... don't let Seacrest ask Siobhan any questions after she is judged... just give her G-D number and go to the next contestant.

ReplyDeleteLapidus' line is in running for the corniest thing I ever heard on Lost.
And Sun never lost her voice - she could always speak Korean.
I was actually expecting them to speak Korean again (when I am caught by surprise or really emotion - I tend to revert automatically to my native tongue)
I agree re Lapidus' line, anon. And he read it like he was in a Burt Reynolds movie.
ReplyDeleteWill "Party Down" be available anywhere else besides Starz during the season, or do I just have to re-subscribe? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDez, like we say in the podcast, it should be streaming on Netflix.

ReplyDeleteSorry, I haven't listened to it (am at work, cannot download).
Looks like I'll be resubbing Starz since I don't belong to Netflix, either.
count me in the minority that actually likes it when you guys ramble
ReplyDelete:)
You weren't just a forensics kid, but a Monty Python forensics kid?
ReplyDeleteThat's a whole lot of insight into your teenage years.
My favourite UK shows:
ReplyDeleteHustle
Misfits
Being Human (My favourite, superb supernatural drama, soon to be remade by Syfy)
Does anyone else think that when Fienberg stops breathing in between sentences and his voice gets... gravelier.. that he sounds like Joss Whedon?
ReplyDeleteooo, kujo, great list.
ReplyDeletefor mine, i would just add Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.

ReplyDeleteWhy aren't you popular with the Chicago police?

ReplyDeleteKujo,
