CBS fall schedule announcment

This morning, CBS was the last of the Big 4 networks to present their fall schedule. (The CW goes tomorrow, but they're the CW.) I have the details, and some quotes and analysis, up at NJ.com.

  1. Any word on Adam Carolla's pilot?

  2. Yes - what of the Aceman's pilot? Mid-season replacement?

  3. Not sure how I feel about Big Bang Theory playing at 9:30. If Monday is the logjam it's been I won't get to it until the next day, as opposed to it being the only thing I watch live to build up time on other things.... Oh well. But at least I'll get to watch HIMYM live.

Other than that? It all looks like typical CBS, some procedurals I'll watch when there is nothing else is on but little else I'll be invested in.

  4. I thought they were going to ditch "Old Christine," so I'm glad it's back! Doesn't look like I'll be picking up any of their new shows unless you rave about them, though. Plus I'm annoyed they ditched "Without A Trace," which I still enjoy.

  5. I'm glad my Race is back, but I'm annoyed by its being bumped later seemingly every-other-week because of CBS's football schedule. Oh, well.

If only TiVo had an automatic "this program is preceded by a live event; do you want to extend the time" button.

  6. Moving BBT is a mistake. Two and a Half Men is definitely "adult" (not mature) humor, while BBT has a much more innocent tone. It should be earlier in the night, not the last of the comedy set.

  7. So glad they put HIMYM back at 8 p.m. Now I don't have to wade through that Big Bang dreck to watch and can avoid accidentally bumping into it altogether.

Guess I'll check out the new Jenna Elfman and Juliana Marguiles shows, but nothing else really leaps from the page.

  8. Iam going to miss the unit now when its gone.

Snakedoc and the other boys did a great job.

Alan, you going to let Lisa de Moraes make fun of you like this?

  10. I predict How I Met Your Mother's ratings to go down. No more sandwich spot between Big Bang and 2.5 Men.

Big Bang Theory is being groomed as the 9pm replacement for 2.5 Men if needed. Men followed Raymond for a couple of years at 9:30 before moving up 30 minutes after Raymond left.

CBS said of moving BBT behind Men (and moving The Mentalist behind CSI) "We are trying to make two top 20 shows into top 10 shows".

CBS: Big Bang Theory > HIMYM

  11. Alan, you going to let Lisa de Moraes make fun of you like this?

Eh. Lisa was making fun of Silverman a lot more than she was making fun of me. And besides, that's what Lisa does: she mocks everything and everyone. It's one of the reasons we get along so well.

  12. Well, this officially turns my live watching at 8pm Monday to FOX full-time, since House is an hour, and no more BBT/HIMYM block.

I agree about moving BBT being a mistake, given the difference in audiences.

  13. Medium moving to CBS Friday at 9? That's just weird. Hope the plots improve--I liked it at first because, for show about a person who sees dead people, it was anchored by Alison & her family being so "normal." Lately, it's become increasingly creepy, plus a lot of gruesome gore, and wouldn't you think that they'd figure out how Alison's dreams work by now? Hm.

  14. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like this is the weakest list of shows since I can remember. I'm glad Chuck is back and FNL, too, but not much else. I'm disappointed Scrubs is back, as much as I love that show. None of the new shows look at all interesting. I get the feeling Jimmy Kimmel was right....

  15. My son and I recently discovered Big Bang Theory as one of the few shows we can watch and enjoy together, and next year it will be on too late. Phooey.

  16. Big mistake for HIMYM. Don't put it as the lead-in CBS, unless you really do want that show to die. HIMYM worked better as the sandwich and I loved it with BBT. Now I have to wait for an hour in between since there is no way I will watch those two shows in between.

  17. I too am curious about Adam Carolla's pilot, "Ace in the Hole."

  18. Hasn't Jenna Elfman already been in a "One Night Stand in San Fransisco turns into a Relationship" show?

  19. Jenna Elfman, does she really need another show?? Eleventh Hour???
    The Good Wife sounds lame...

  20. Alan, is it me or are there more shows switching networks than normal?

  21. I like it ... I think they want to make BBT a little spicier in the later time slot .. I have no problem with that.

    Let 'Mother' die.

  22. I'm very disappointed that The Unit has been canceled. This past season wasn't great, but it was still better than most of what's on the air. Also, the last episode was a poor way to end the show. I wish they had known it was coming in order to plan a suitable final ep.

  23. I think "Medium" has always been unnecessarily creepy, and not just because of all the scary ghosts and murders. It features a sweet suburban mom who wakes up screaming from real nightmares each night, her equally sleep-deprived husband whose every professional success is inevitably followed by an even worse disaster, three sweet little girls who encounter menacing events on a regular basis. Which wouldn't be so bad if crime-solving psychic Allison weren't such an idiot -- after decades of prophetic dreams, she still can't manage to figure out what they mean until half an hour after the audience has, and somehow still hasn't managed to figure out yet that the best way for her to get missing information is to go back to sleep.

Hmmm, overly creepy, not too smart... maybe it is a CBS drama.

  24. I'll ask here, but can anyone explain CBS's fixation and eternal effort to make Alex O'Loughlin the next big thing (or the screaming fangirls who consistently claim that he is)?

  25. Hmmm, no more Big Bang Theory vs. Chuck decisions on Monday nights? Interesting. I get the feeling both shows could get a boost from not competing directly with one another.

  26. Matt-

Its just like with Simon Baker...they believed in him mightily, but they are just trying to find the right project for him...With Baker it was "The Mentalist", who know what it'll be with Laughlin

  27. Worth noting that Gary Unmarried was renewed, thus ending the reign of Paula "Show Killer" Marshall.

  28. Hey Alan,

I was at the Upfront today (one of the perks of work). If there was anyone I wanted to get a picture with, it would be with you cause your blog rocks!

Anywho, you're right about how CBS isn't known for being "sexy". And apparently, it works for them. I know I don't watch many of their shows (NBC and cable has me already). But some of their new ones show promise. Granted, I need to take a look at its competition, but I don't think CBS aims to have massive hit after massive hit. I think they are simply after consistency, even with rating growth. They rather have a bunch of shows do well than one show be a massive hit and the rest get nothing.

  29. I am terribly concerned with the lack of television series next season that will feature overweight blue collar slobs with improbably hot wives.

  30. Time slots mean nothing to those with DVRs. BBT has been so MUCH BETTER than HIMY (note: don't make a D-bag your lead!) this season. Why? Because BBT is a simple, but incredibly funny comedy, whereas HIMYM wraps itself in dumb plot turns and time twists so critics think it's hip. give me the straight ahead storytelling of BBT. Simple, concise and so much funnier. Good to see it get the love from it's network!

  31. "Three Rivers"

That was the original title to the Bruce Willis / Sarah Jessica Parker film, "Striking Distance" (moment of silence for Robert Pastorelli... "who's the best cop now?! A bullet-proof vest!").

The studio cut the name and changed it because they didn't think anyone would understand what it meant.

  32. Instead of Jenna Elfman's new show, couldn't they just continue Samantha Spade's story? I'm kidding, of course, but I'm disappointed that Without A Trace has been canceled. It's one of my favorite procedurals, and that's saying something.

I'm to the point where I seldom get excited about any of the new shows from the Big Three. I automatically expect them suck.

  33. Really upset about Without a Trace cancellation. It's been my favorite show for many years. From what I understand, the show's ratings were still pretty good, so what's up with that? Who do I complain to about this (not that it'll do any good)?
