CW fall schedule announced -- Upfront Week

The CW just announced their fall schedule, and I have the details at NJ.com. Not surprisingly, "Reaper" wasn't picked up, though there's still the chance of the syndication deal.

  1. Not surprised they didn't pick up that show about young politicos that was supposedly in the works. CW viewers have never struck me as especially politically engaged, or even of voting age.

  2. I hate the CW. They cancel Veronica Mars and Reaper but some how One Tree Hill lives on? WTF?

  3. My fiancée's just happy that Supernatural is back. It's the only time I actually watch the CW. I'll probably check out Vampire Diaries too, though all I'm expecting is watered-down True Blood.

  4. What's the over-under on the X Files remake? I say 2011. Maybe followed by Briscoe County Jr.?

Supernatural, which I think had a pretty good season of remaking a major Xena plotline, remains the only time I even glide past this channel.

  5. How will Paulina be replaced on ANTM? How has casting for Season of the Shorties gone? What is the purpose of Jay Manuel?

  6. I'm surprised that Tree Hill will be back. Watched the season finale the other night, and I really though it was the series finale. They pretty much wrapped it all up, leaving them all happy.

  7. One Tree Hill is the Cher of CW shows, except I like Cher. What is it with that show, anyway?

I'd say Supernatural is probably their best established show right now, even though it's been uneven the last couple of seasons. I'm glad it's coming back. They might want to stop after season 5 though. The 6th season seems to be a death knell for many shows.

CW viewers have never struck me as especially politically engaged, or even of voting age.CW's shows are guilty pleasures for lots of smart, socially and politically engaged adults. Although I refuse to feel guilty about watching Supernatural, Reaper and America's Next Top Model.

After Buffy, which I believe was one of the best shows that's ever been on television, I'm skeptical about any vampire shows, but I might give Vampire Diaries a try.

  8. Privileged should've returned. One Tree Hill? Did not anyone see the last episode? Clearly, that should've been, the last episode....

Where's the promised Veronica Mars movie? Oh, wait. They gave up Sundays.

  9. Paulina will be replaced by a cardboard cutout of Tyra. Alternating thought bubbles will be added to the cutout with the phrases "fierce" or "hot tranny mess" depending on the situation. Casting has been problematic as girls are now slouching in order to get on the show. As a result, Tyra will be doing a special episode of her talk show the dangers of poor posture and osteoporosis. Jay Manuel is creative director of the photo shoots. He also receives a bonus each time a girl cries over a haircut. Expect him to top Forbes's list of America's wealthiest people by the end of the next season.

  10. Where's the promised Veronica Mars movie?

That's been dead for a while. As Rob has told a few people (notably Ausiello), the downturn in the economy killed any real shot it had. Joel Silver could have done it as a vanity project in healthier times, but not now.

  11. @Doug: Aw... don't tease me with Brisco County jokes... I loved that show, but it *definitely* wouldn't work without Bruce Campbell (too old) and Julius Carry (too dead), though I suspect John Astin would be game to reprise his Professor character.

Shame about Reaper, but this year hasn't quite lived up to the potential of the end of last year. Still hoping for syndication.

  12. I'm bummed about The Body Politic. What I saw of it looked good and of the slew of CW pilots this year, that one got the best reviews. I don't watch the CW now and it looks like I won't be this year, either.

  13. Since Privileged has been canceled and Reaper is on its death bed, Supernatural is probably the only show I'll be watching on the CW next TV season.

I think Supernatural's most recent season has been its best yet. I never thought they'd go in the direction of angels vs. demons, and it's interesting to see how it's played out throughout the course of the season. It should probably end after season 5, though, since where could they go after defeating Lucifer?

  14. I've been looking at some of these articles about the possibility of a Reaper syndication deal. It's probably not a bad idea to let your local CW affiliate know that you would be interested in seeing such a thing. Nothing radical -- don't send any demon horns or anything -- just a simple letter letting them know that you've heard about this syndication idea, that you enjoyed the show and you would watch it if they picked it up. (unless, of course, you hated it, in which case, just shut up *grin*)

  15. Does anyone know when we would hear if Reaper is picked up by a syndicate?

  16. Alan, sorry to ask you but what is the chance of Reaper being picked up? Are talks going well?

  17. Alan, does this mean that The Game and Everybody Hates Chris are goners???

I actually know nothing about this, save what I read on the interwebs. "Reaper" isn't a show I'm plugged into behind-the-scenes, unfortunately.

Yup, the CW has (as the WB did shortly before the merger, and as UPN might have had it lasted much longer on its own) gotten out of the African American sitcom business for now.

  20. @Peter: One Tree Hill is officially the new According to Jim.

@Maura: I was overly snarky in my first post. Though I never got back into Reaper this season, I did like it originally; and Supernatural seems OK, though it's on at a bad time for me. I think it's the status of the inane ANTM as the network's most popular show, and the obsession with remaking Fox shows that were a waste of time to begin with, that led me into broad brush country.

  21. Question: Who will die first CW or Smallville?

The reason the One Tree Hill finale looked like a series finale was that they knew Chad Michael Murray and the female lead (whoever her name is) would not be back next year and I guess when a teen soup has to written out its main couple the finsle will look more like it's a series one.

What did you see of it? And what reviews? From what I can tell, all the fan chatter about it is basically revolving around the fact that the Veronica Mars nuts want Jason Dohring back on tv. Their craziness is pretty much only second to that of the Moonlight fans.

  23. I knew Privileged was a goner but it's sad to see it become official. It really was quite the little gem of a show, but it seemed much more in the "WB" vein than the "CW" one so I'm not surprised it was axed.

    I miss The WB.

  24. "What did you see of it? And what reviews?"

All I got to see was a short clip from the pilot here: http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/blink/2009/05/video_cws_life_unexpected_and.php

As for reviews, I read positive things at places like TV by the Numbers and Zap2it, as well as a few twitter feeds from TV bloggers. It's not Alan or Mo Ryan or anything, so take it for what you will. Unfortunately, we'll never get the chance to see if it was really any good for ourselves.

Sometimes I'm ridiculously obtuse. Would that there were a "tone" detector for the inter-webs, kind of like the Universal Translator from Star Trek.

Also, I didn't think you were trying to make anyone feel guilty. I was making fun of myself because I am a little embarrassed that I watch Top Model, especially because I actually care about those silly, silly girls.

Jay Manuel is creative director of the photo shoots. He also receives a bonus each time a girl cries over a haircut. Expect him to top Forbes's list of America's wealthiest people by the end of the next season.Ha. Oh hell yes. I loved the time he got so irritated with all the crying girls that he walked off the set. The man deserves battle pay.

@Adam: I've heard that ANTM is allowing tall girls to audition for the shorties cycle, maybe so they can say, for once, "You're too tall" when it's time to get rid of someone.

  26. We're advocating all Reaper fans to write their CW affiliates. Google "reaperdmv" for all the details. And don't forget to contact ABC Studios and thank them for not giving up on Reaper.

  27. If Reaper lives on, I'll watch it, but in a strange way I was sort of looking forward to a series-free fall. I assume no one will pick up My Name Is Earl and I decided a long time ago not to watch any AfterSCRUBS if they should make the mistake to try to make one, so if Reaper went as well, it would have been sort of a relief.

  28. I wish that they would stop renewing Smallville because they just need to make him Superman now. Lex is no longer on the show, and while I thought the Doomsday stuff was pretty decent, the finale was just horrible. It's obvious they don't know where they are going with this, with characters that are introduced way too early and then given personality changes, or else killed off and "other" characters put in their places.

I should stop watching this show, but I can't help it.

  29. ^I'm on the fourth ep of this season and it's really been subpar. If Tom Welling weren't so very, very pretty....

  30. Coming to the CW in 2010 ... Models Inc.?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Dear goodness. The CW has just formed into the all-teenage girl channel. Even with shows as manly as Smallville and Supernatural, their audiences are predominately female. Doesn't CW know their less "glam" shows perform better? Less buzz, but they're better shows.

  32. Alan, i don't understand, please answer me : why Joel Silver can't make the Veronica Mars movie and Ron Howard can make the Arrested Development movie during a crisis financial period ?
They have the same cult following so why ????
