TCA: 'Mad Men' & 'Breaking Bad' own the first night of tour

Over at NJ.com, I have a brief account of last night's awesome AMC party with the people from "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad," along with some thoughts on how I'm going to write about the third season of "Mad Men."

  1. Those pictures got me so amped up I don't even know what to do with myself between now and August 16. I'd say watch Season 2 again, but I'd blow through that so quick I'd still be (January?) jonesing pretty bad.

On a slightly related note, Amazon is having another of those box sets sales like they did for The Wire and Deadwood back around Christmas, and it includes those two shows, plus Band of Brothers, Sopranos, Mad Men, and others that people around here like.

I don't know how to hyperlink in a comment (someone enlighten me, please) so this will look ugly: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&plgroup=1&ref%5F=amb%5Flink%5F84769371%5F20&docId=1000399971

  2. There are times when I wish Mad Men's fan base had a bit more of a criminal element. With The Wire, if the critics received a screener on a Tuesday, you could count on it being online and for sale on the streets by Thursday. With Mad Men, the critics have the premiere a full three weeks before airing, and nothing will likely come of it. Come on pirates, get on your game!

  3. he gave them a list of things he'd prefer they not mention before the premiere airs, including exactly when the new season will be set.

Is this an unintentional hint to expect some sort of surprise as far as this season's time-setting?

Not necessarily. Just that, to look back on the start of season two, Matt would have considered the 18-month leap to be just as much of a spoiler as telling people that Peggy didn't seem to have the baby anymore.

  6. Those photos are fantastic (I loved Morse shoeless at the shoe-shine stand). I have to say Peggy looks pretty slender and hot in #5, although she looks like she's back to frumpy in #6.

When's the season premiere? August 16? Argghhh!!

@Hatfield: to include a hyperlink in your comment you have to do the actual HTML. I tried to do an example of what it looks like, but Blogger read it as an actual link.

But, basically, start with an open pointy bracket (<), follow it with
    a href=
then the URL in double quotes
then closed pointy bracket. Then put in your linkable text.

Then close it with the pointy brackets around /a

    Does that help?

Wasn't the leap into season 2 more like 14 months? IIRC, S1 ended around Thanksgiving 1960 and S2 picked up around the first of Feb 1962.

  8. I like being one of the few people 'in the know' alongside you, Alan. Unfortunately your link is ironically blocked here at work so I am not entirely sure what images everyone is referring to, but am pretty certain I helped with the finishing on all of them. I looked over our mailing list for the press packet and did not see your name, but hopefully that was due to how insanely long the list was. Here is a link to the NY Magazine unwrapping of it:

You're probably right. I didn't do the math.

  10. Thanks, Karen! It helps a lot, because even if I can't figure it out right away, now the mini-tutorial will be here.

  11. Is the link to the NJ.com story itself blocked, or is it the link within that story to Fienberg's gallery at Hitfix?

  12. Hmmm, you didn't write much at all about my favorite current show, Breaking Bad. Did anyone say anything interesting?

They're much earlier in the process than "Mad Men" -- they're still working on the scripts, and filming doesn't begin till mid-August -- so there wasn't as much to glean. I did try to nail the writers down on whether Walt's mustache would be back or whether he'd keep the goatee. They said they were still wrestling with that, and that, "You're asking the right questions."

  15. Do you have any info as to what the plot of 'Rubicon' entails?

  17. Dammit, I've been a devout Christina Hendricks fan ever since she was Saffron on Firefly, and geometrically amped when she made her appearance as Joan Holloway...

...so what is it about January Jones' ice-cold stares, particularly in the bookend pictures, that have me so hot and bothered?

  18. Counting the minutes...

  19. I'm a bit late to the Mad Men party. Watched the first season on DVD and just inhaled the second on AMC on Demand in just a couple days. Just wanted to thank Alan for all the wonderful commentary. Was great to get some "conversation" of sorts on a year-old show, everyone's comments here are also thought provoking and terrific. I'd watch an episode and run to my computer and read your review and scroll through all the comments.

Does AMC generally post all the shows ON Demand? It was great to watch with no commercials. Waiting a week between episodes is going to be tough! Can't wait for the premiere..
