Early in tonight's "Nip/Tuck" season premiere (10 p.m., FX), our plastic surgeon anti-heroes are getting a tour of a TV show in need of some medical consultants when they witness the show's star throwing a tantrum over a script for a musical episode. There's also a short item about the "My So-Called Life" DVD. Been having a lot of fun rewatching those episodes, especially the Jason Katims-penned "Life of Brian."
"That's the kind of desperate schlock you don't do until your fifth season!" he screams.
Though "Nip/Tuck" has thus far resisted the allure of an all-singing, all-dancing hour, the start of the show's fifth season finds creator Ryan Murphy trying two other gimmicks: moving the series from Miami to L.A., and having Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) and Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) get involved with show-within-the-show "Hearts 'N Scalpels."

Thanks for the review on the MSCL DVD, Alan! I didn't know it was canceled even though it averaged 10 million viewers...that must seem like gold by today's standards. I love all the Zwick/Herskovitz collaborations.
It's really sad how the time allocated for the actual episode of a TV show in a one hour slot has dwindled by so much. Is the decrease as egregious for comedies? I bet they could include one of the wonderful deleted scenes of "The Office" that's put up each week on NBC.com if they take out all the "Bee Movie" promos that run during the episodes.
Alan, do you know how FX plans to air Nip/Tuck this year since they've picked up 22 episodes? Will they be airing straight through or will the season be split?

I believe the plan is to air the first 14 more or less consecutively (with a couple of weeks off around the holidays), and then the final 8 sometime next year.
Wow, I had no idea MSCL only had a one-season run. For some reason I thought it was on for years.
Did anyone else see paragraph marks at the end of each paragraph in the first section?
(I'm not going to bother to make an account on nj.com to post a comment. I have too many accounts already.)
