Sepinwall on TV: 'Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic' review

In today's column, I review the "Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic" DVD, which may be a better movie version of "Watchmen" than the upcoming Zack Snyder film, but still doesn't quite equal just reading the thing.

Unless there is somethig wrong on my end, I get a blank page.

As I said in your last Watchmen-related post, I LOVED this. Thought it was just brilliant.

The One-man narration bothered me at the start, until I chose to see it as somebody reading the comic. When I read the comic, I know SS is a woman, but I still hear her lines through my voice. Similarly, I can picture a bit of movement, but picturing things that aren't on the page doesn't often happen.

It lived up to exactly what it was billed as- a motion version of the comic, with the same experience as though I was reading it.

Since I wasn't following along as I listened to the story (You'll know it's time to turn the page when you hear the chimes ring like this), I missed that they skipped over anything. What was left out?

Have you already watched the Snyder movie? I'd be interested in hearing your opinion

I don't know if it's a lot, but there are definitely lines of dialogue I know were left out. For instance, when Rorshach gets arrested, they left out the whole bit about people finding lifts in his shoes and realizing just how short he is.

Haven't seen it yet, other than what was screened at NY Comic-Con a few weeks back. (Do a blog search for Watchmen, and you'll find the post I did on it.)

You were pretty positive about the stuff you saw a few weeks back, but this review repeatedly suggests that the movie might suck. While that is always a possibility with any movie, especially one as hyped as Watchmen, what changed? You used to be so optimistic, back in the day...

I saw the first installment of this and it held no interest for me. Reading the graphic novel is just so much more rewarding.

Gibbons' female characters look like men in drag anyway (look at their faces!), so I don't think that the male narration changes anything. Am looking forward to watching this!

I don't see the point in this. I have zero interest in checking it out.

I'll watch the film, but after reading the graphic novel I'm skeptical that they'll be able to pull it off. There's also a part of me that thinks the wishes of Alan Moore should have been respected. If the creator doesn't want a film adaptation...well, maybe there shouldn't be a film adaptation.

I'll still watch though.

Glad to see you crossing over to the sane side, Alan. It's so good to be here. Alan Moore reads us poetry by the fire every night.
