Flight of the Conchords: That was all there was

It seemed pretty clear that the season two finale of "Flight of the Conchords" was Bret and Jemaine's way of saying goodbye to a show that was fun but had probably run its course. (Or, at the very least, that would require an incredibly long hiatus between seasons so they could build up a backlog of songs.) And after a lot of speculation, the guys finally made that official today with this announcement on their website:
Bret, Jemaine and James (co-creator/director) said “we’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a 3rd season. We’re very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist.
That's all, folks. It was fun while it lasted. Better they go out relatively on top than to keep doing the show with ever-diminishing returns, at least in terms of the songs.

As much as it breaks my heart ... it is the right thing to do.

Best episode? I vote for Yoko.

I'll miss the show, but it's a noble decision by the guys.

I'm going to go have a cry in the rain, now.

That's a shame. The second season was a little weaker than the first, but I was hoping to see them rebound with a little more time to prepare.

Oh well, more time for touring

Pretty much expected and probably for the best, but I'll still miss the fictional Bret, Jemaine, Mel and Murray. Onward and upward!

This will leave two fewer d**ks on HBO's dance floor. Sigh.

Peace Out Hiphopopotomus and Rhymenocerous.

Perhaps I should have been more constructive with my feedback.

If that's what they're into...

Well, at least there's still the albums and the bbc radio series and the dvds for season 1 + 2 and there tours of comedy festivals and ... oh, I'll still miss them. Also,it'd have been nice if they got an Emmy .. even though every great show seems to be without one.

its for the best, the first season was great, the second season not so much. even though i LURVED the Australia episode that was directed by Gondry.... but the 2nd season songs were weak, and the songs were always the best part of FotC.

i suggest to you all, if you dont know it yet, this english duo called The Mighty Boosh, they only have 3 seasons/series (only 6 episodes each since they are british, and wrote and done everything in it). it is fantastic, i think the Conchords took quite a lot of the Boosh book. they are not too similar, the Boosh are weirder and more fantastical, the jokes are a bit subtler but theres a kinship there.

i got into the Conchords first, but now i like the Boosh better, i love the weirdness the crazy worlds and i think they are more charismatic, and the tension-love between the characters is more interesting, because they are nothing alike and still theres something that brings them together.

i think the second season is the best place to start.

anyway, enough with the Boosh. I love those Conchords boys, i think they've done great, it must be really hard to write a series, write songs and act on it, its just so much to do.

i hope to see them soon.

So I guess they're taking a bus out of town with Carol Brown, but I was hoping that they'd stick around.

Such a shame. While the music was weaker in the second series (except for the brilliant Carol Brown), the writing and comic timing continued to improve. I would have been more than happy with a music-less 3rd season. But I guess it was not to be. Goodbye to a soon-to-be-classic show.

Yes, definitely Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor. And I will really miss Murray.

I'm partial to Carol Brown. It's one of the top songs on my itunes count.

Oh no--I was hoping for a third season. There were some pretty weak episodes--but still there were some highs.

I remember the season opener being very funny with the scene where the two guys go up into the clouds with the angels and sing a song--that was a really good episode.

But the one about Bret's gang was just really bad. Still, I would watch religiously if there were any more.

I'm truly sad--I miss going into that crazy, hipster-fresh, out of control world or singsong craziness.

Prettiest Girl In The Room.

I'll be expecting an Office Style Christmas Special type thing though.

I know spin-offs are often poorly conceived and badly executed but I'd really love to see Murray on TV again.

As an Australian, this news leaves a smug smile on my face.

I'm still hoping for a full-on movie musical. It can't not happen.

I'd watch a spinoff with Murray and the NZ Prime Minister...

No, I’m not crying... I’ve just been cutting onions, i'm making a lasagna.

I'll miss them so much! Best eps: "Unnatural Love" and "The Third Conchord".

Too bad. The Conchords will be missed. My favorite was the New Zealand Prime Minister episode. "A glitch, I knew it!" I will miss Murray most--he just killed me.

Ditto was said about the Boosh. Now, I want a bouncy castle!

Put down "miss him."

Aside from the performance of music and the fact it's also a comedy centered around two guys, I actually don't think The Mighty Boosh is all that comparable. Although a bit more oblique, "subtle" is also not a word I'd use to describe that show. To me Boosh is as different from Conchords as 30 Rock is from Parks and Recreation.

saraghina said...

well, i didnt say that the boosh were subtle, i said that the jokes were. but maybe subtle isnt the right word, you see, english is not my first language, so sometimes i find it hard to get my point across.

i also said that the shows werent very similar. but at least to me it seems obvious that the conchords knew of the boosh and what they were doing, and used them as ONE of their references on their show. there's even a couple of similar shots and fleetwood mac jokes...

that and the fact, as you mentioned, that they are both centered around two guys, who happen to burst into song out of nowhere, is enough reason for me to make a connection between them, dont you think?
