It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, "The Nightman Cometh": The play's the thing

Anyone have any thoughts on the homoerotic musical "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" season finale?

I still prefer the original episode with "Night Man" and "Day Man," but any trip inside Charlie's creative and disturbing brain is welcome.

O.G. Dayman/Nightman will always be great, but that was one of the stronger episodes of the season -- and that's say something considering last week's "Extreme Home Makeover" episode was one that had me just dying. (Particularly the home invasion. Alan, if you haven't watched that one, I recommend it.)

I also had a great appreciation of Charlie once again trying to dress up like Bob Dylan; The whole little boy thing was priceless; When Mac throws Dennis' legs up in the air, oh lord. I was crying laughing.

I loved it. It was a great way to callback that fantastic song.

The "boy's soul" discussion had me hysterics.

I'd have to say though, my favorite episode this season was the 3rd episode, about the billboard model.

Well I guess I should toss out my "The Gang Makes a Musical" spec. :(

But "The Nightman Cometh" was excellent. There needs to be an official soundtrack of songs so I can be disturbed, yet still very amused, all the time.

I thought the best part of the episode was Mary Elizabeth Ellis' reaction shots; they were side splittingly funny. And given that Day and Ellis are married in real life, it makes the episode all the funnier. And creepier.

It reminds me of Rob McIlheney boasting on the S3 commentaries that the production designer got Mac's mom's house to look exactly like the house he grew up in. You wanna tell us something, Rob? ;-)

I agree that the original Nightman/Dayman was better, but it was a bit of a switch to see Charlie not be the insane wildcard while trying to put on the musical. Telling the old lady pianist to stop talking about Calvin Coolidge was a hoot. For once he was the adult in the scenario.

The reaction shots from the waitress killed me but the proposal was almost tragic, until Charlie said he would continue stalking her tomorrow.

Overall, I enjoyed the gas crisis episode best, as well as last week's home invasion / makeover.

I get the sense that they didn't have a lot of time to write this season, so I hope they get a bit of a break, because this season had moments, but probably needed a bit more refinement, or at least refinement Sunny style.

Watching Charlie be the man in charge rather than the mindless follower and rise to a level of near competence was what I liked most about this episode, in particular his "Song or no song?" rant at Dee. The actual musical was funny enough, but I was disappointed that we didn't get a follow-up to the original Dylanesque Nightman song, although admittedly the way that song was performed would've been difficult to work into a musical theater setting.

"I think the rape scene went very well."

One more thing, I really liked the opening scene where the gang couldn't comprehend that Charlie's musical has no ulterior motives ("Who is this versus?" "Whose face are we shoving this musical in?").

no good place for this, but...

The SAG/AMPTP mediation has failed, a strike authorization vote is next

sigh

at least the Scrubs DVDs from last year didn't cost full price for 3/4ths of a season the way the Grey's DVDs did.

I have extremely mixed feelings about this show, but "The Nightman Cometh" was terrific. Dee's improvised song killed me--"Most men consider me to be an eight or nine out of tennnn..."

Agree with everyone who said last week's was really strong too. I laughed for about 5 minutes after the "move that bus" reveal.

I don't know which ep was more homoerotic, this one or last week's (especially with Dennis' Village People Construction Worker look).

"Boy's hole" will never stop being funny to me.

By the way, for those interested this video features a deleted musical number from the episode. I think I might've preferred it to all of the ones that made it into the final cut.

Turns out they were 100% right.

And because I'm an idiot, I forgot to actually link to the video that I was referring to:

While nothing will ever beat the original "Night Man" and "Day Man" songs, as a complete episode this one was in my opinion even better than the battle of the bands competition, and probably my favorite episode ever.

Huh. I thought this was one of the very weakest episodes ever. But it definitely seems like I'm in the minority here. To me, the "putting on play" thing feels really played out after Guffman and Hamlet 2.

I still adore the series, but do feel this season wasn't very strong (maybe still coming back from the WGA strike?)

This episode was hilarious. I think this was one of the best episodes of the season and a great way to end the season. Cant wait for next years episode!

I can see why they cut out "It's Nature, Shit Happens," as they kept showing Charlie getting upset with Mac throwing in all the rape/sodomy stuff. Unless Mac came up with the "that's why I sodomized that boy" lyrics on his own, which wouldn't surprise me. That song's hilarious, still.

wow... the "It's Nature, Shit Happens" song was hilarious... especially the Cobra Kai line.

What a brilliant finale.

Boy's Soul/Boy's Hole might be the funniest bit in the show's history
